"My birth was not the typical textbook labor. I was a “tiny” 5’2” guaranteed to have a HUGE baby and that’s why I chose the birthcenter. That and the fact that all 3 of my sisters and closest friends had C-sections. I had begun to wonder if it was any longer possible for women to experience natural childbirth. On Cathy’s recommendation we induced on 5/11. After nearly 9 hours of Pitocin, and a half hour in the hot tub, Cathy wisely puled mom out of the tub to check how far along we were. "Moira, being our fourth baby, we had some idea of how the labor might go and we fully prepared the other children by watching birth videos, practicing birth noises and positions and reading books…during pushing with my eyes closed, I could hear the children debating about who could eat which granola bar from the multipack, while at the same time exclaiming “Oh! I see the head!”, and “It’s my turn to hold the flash light!” When I opened my eyes, the kids were all sitting cross-legged between my knees, my sister was holding the video camera and drinking dunkin donuts coffee very casually, Cathy and the nurse Irene were nonchalantly preparing supplies and calmly encouraging me. It was surreal!! Rob, my husband, was at my back so I couldn’t see his reaction to this scene. What was so different about this birth was seeing it happen through my family’s eyes and knowing that this is what parenting is all about – thinking of your loved ones needs and feelings first.
